Weekend previews: WNBL- Round 7

A mouth-watering clash between second and third on the table will kick off Round 7 in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL). This match sees some of the competition’s most dominant players go head-to-head, making for a must-watch match.

UC Capitals v Melbourne Boomers

Friday 7pm at National Convention Centre

Key match-up: Kia Nurse v Jenna O’Hea

O’Hea will need to keep Nurse quiet in this game, as it could be the difference between a win and a loss. Nurse is averaging the second most points in the WNBL this season with 19.57 points. This is behind her teammate, Kelsey Griffin who sits on an average of 20.14 points a game. O’Hea has the benefit of playing as a guard or forward, which is what Nurse plays as well. Expect O’Hea to play defensively to curb Nurse’s influence.

Season so far: Both teams have experienced a good run of form this season. The Capitals’ consistent wins came at the start of the season, charging out of the blocks to reach the top of the table. Now it’s the Boomers who have found their form that saw them head to last season’s Grand Final, rising up to third on the ladder. They are the in-form team at the moment with Lindsay Allen playing some unbelievable basketball. The Capitals currently sit second on the table, so this should be a very entertaining match.

The game: The Capitals and Melbourne Boomers both have immense scoring power and have both secured some big wins this year. Last time these two teams met, the Boomers got the upper hand. The Boomers’ big names seem to be improving each week, with Cayla George and Steph Talbot dominating on the court. However, the Capitals will back themselves in, given the home court advantage and their fair share of big names like Nurse and Griffin.
